Some day I want to get some chickens so I can have fresh eggs. What are the best breeds for egg production. I have seen chicken breed websites and there are sooo many and I read some are better for meat vs eggs, etc.
I really would like a breed that tends to be friendly and not too skittish. Something I can hold for a little while. And I don’t care what color eggs, as long as it can produce a couple pretty much daily throughout the year.

Rhode Island Reds
Red Shavers
Thoose are 2 really good layers!!
If you want a broody hen (one that sits on eggs) Silkies are very good!

My aunt has 27 chickens and the ones that lay eggs all the time are Rhode Island Reds…

    I think!

    She gets about 10-15 eggs a day…

    Hope that helps!!! :3

it depends on if you want them to hatch eggs
if you want a bird to raise chicks then you should get a broody breed that lays well like a orpington, brahma, sussex, or a jersey giant.
most of the good very good layers don’t go broody like the leghorn, ancona, buttercup, andalusians, and minorca and other mediterranean breeds
the mediterranean breeds don’t go broody, they a lot of lay white eggs but are not friendly and tend to shy away from humans, and they don’t lay through the winter
hybrids like red sex link, black sex link and golden comet (their are lots of names for each one of these but they are basically the same thing) are excellent layers of brown eggs and they will lay right through the winter, and they are friendly toward people.
some of the dual purpose breeds like australorp orpington, rhode island red, and barred rocks are good brown egg layers and are cold tolerant, and they lay for many years right through the winter and are one of the friendlies breeds.
so if you want a friendly breed that lays a good amount of brown egg then go for the australorp but if you want a not very friendly breed that is a excellent layer of white eggs then go for the leghorn
here are some good sites that talk about the amount of eggs

I think that if you will check around you will find that Black Astralops (sp) is the bird that holds the records for the most eggs laid in a year. They are a nice standard bred chicken that is also has a nice meaty frame. You can put them in a pot of dumplings when they quit laying.

There are MANY breeds of chickens that are EXCELLENT egg layers and some have been mentioned. . . Buff Orphingtons,Bardrock,Production Reds,Rhode Island Reds. . . too many to mention.

My favorite Chicken Website is. . . . CackleHatchery.com It not only tells important information about each breed of chicken such as their quality as a meat or egg producer but also shows colored pictures of not only the adult bird but chicks as well.

    Good Luck
