well being a previous owner of 93 chickens an now only having 10 chickens becasue of moving i know that chickens are not to be taken lightly they are still work and you must remember to take care of them firstly you should start out on your chicken houseing it needs to be fox and feral animal proof this means that you need to have a pen that is fenced off or enclosed but with enough space for the chicken to scratch about but the type of predators is affected by your area also so lets say you live in a suburban area try keeping your fence to about your shoulder hieght and the house also needs to be predator proof so try getting one that is off the ground say half a foot high if you know you get foxes (which you can findout by your local council) keep the fence high maybe even hieten it more because they can climb reall well but burry it into the ground about 3 feet and curve the wire outwards so that when the foxes get to the bottom of it they run into wire i have avoided burring the wire by putting up an electric fence keep in mind they are very very crafty and determined and they WILL make a mess of your chickens if they can, but if you have a pen then you dont have to be as worried but this also depends on the pen you get moveing on, you need a dry area inside the pen preferably a couple nesting boxes if not then make sure there is about the thickenss of about 4 straw biscuts(this is the squres of straw you get when you break up one whole block) on the floor of the pen depending on how big the pen is of course also inside you should have some perches that are thick enough for the foul to rest its breast bone on it. food should be mainly grains but food scraps are a great subsitute just dont feed them food that is off (the food can be a little old though) citric fruits or mouldy bread as it can be toxic they are like us when it comes to feeding them they cant stand off food just about as much as us. water needs to be on a preferably flat part of ground and with a wooden block under it so it doesn't get dirty as quick or on a higher surface. clean out the pen at least once a week this still depends on how many fouls you have, if you want a spesific breed best to read the book that i have now memorised pockets of poultry by carol ekarius on different breeds of poultry two other books i recomend would be derek halls chickens and dorothy readings a guide to keeping poultry in australia these books are very helpful on your path way to getting chickens my own opinion on chickens is if you look after them they look after you they are very rewarding especially after you get your first bunch of eggs and believe me there is a big diference in taste in both meat and eggs i hope this helps and i wish you the best of luck with your chickens
References :
taking care of chickens is easy and not that time consuming on a small scale. i would assume you probably want about ten chickens. if you just want eggs you dont need a rooster the only thing the rooster does is fertilizes the eggs. hens will lay without a rooster but the eggs are only good for eating they want hatch. you need to feed the hens laying mash you can get this at tractor supply but if there is a livestock feed store near you feed is mostlikely cheaper there. you will need to get a five gallon feeder because with this your chickens will have a constant feed supply and a five gallon waterer for the same reason there are also types of automatic waterer buying the equipment and the feed is the most expensive part of it.
