Did you know that there are more exotic animals in private ownership than in all the zoos and sanctuaries?
This is a huge problem in the United States, as well as many other countries that allow this to happen.
Did you know that 98% of all exotic animals held as pets die before they reach age 2? And did you know that it is legal to house these animals in cages just big enough for them to stand up and turn around? There have been countless investigations all revealing the same thing: There are simply no responsible owners.
Organizations like REXANO (Responible Exotic Animal Ownership) claim to support responsible ownership. One of the leaders of REXANO kept his cougar locked up in a room no larger than a closet. Another head REXANO member owns a white tiger. That alone shows the ignorance of their organization as white tigers are born through inbreeding. Furthermore, most of these animals would have a territory of over 120 square miles in the wild. There is no way to replicate that. These animals often live on cement floors or in dirt. REXANO says it’s goal is to “protect the rights of exotic animal owners”… But what about the rights of the animals they own?
Exotic owners will often use the animals as symbols of power or uniqueness. They will often buy animals such as white tigers and golden tabbies, as well as hybrids such as ligers and tigons. All of these animals are extremely unhealthy and a lot of them need to be bred to produce a somewhat healthy one.
Breeders will often sell animals, usually cubs, online. When the animal grows up, it is very common for it to be abandoned. Keep in mind, it takes years and years to fully understand how to take care of an animal like a tiger. Most people buying them do not know how to take care of them.
There are so many cats being abandoned, that accredited animal shelters have to decline hundreds, if not, thousands of cats each year. Most cats in sanctuaries are from the horrible exotic pet trade.

believe me i …
believe me i understand what your saying..ownership of these animal is given away to easly….and BIG cat ownership should be very
strict..but i hope …
strict..but i hope to get a lynx one day. but there is no way i will get one if i am not in a healthy financial situation, and btw i’m not some kid who thinks havin a lynx is ‘badass’. and ive done extensive research on the subject. so i know what i’m gettin in to. i do support your ideas to a point. and i think your intensions are admirble. but just remember most owners of SMALL wild cats a quite responsible.
The thing is, most …
The thing is, most captive exotics (big cats, not monkeys) live in dirty, small cages in people backyards or basements (not warm, cozy homes). When they are cubs, yes, they live in the house, but once they reach a large size (If they make it that long) they live terribly, usually without enrichment or proper diet.
lol…o.k. compare …
lol…o.k. compare tht to the wild…some kittens are to weak to live….besides there will be no ‘wild’ left soon with population rising like it is. its a nasty cruel world out there and if you could ask a cat if it would prefer to starve and get stuck in traps and shot at, watch its kittens die ect. and compare tht to a warm home with a meal every day…..well nuf said!
Sorry, it’s not …
Sorry, it’s not propoganda. And I only showed neglected animals as that is a representation of a majority of exotic pets. The fact of the matter is, most owners are unprepared to properly take care of their animals. 98% die withinthe first two years.
Sorry, but your …
Sorry, but your statistics are irrelevant. The proportion of dog owners to exotic owners is very large. So that type of data can hardly be considered an accurate comparison.
were 33 fatal dog …
were 33 fatal dog attacks in the USA. Most of the victims who receive medical attention are children, half of whom are bitten in the face. Dog bite losses exceed $1 billion per year, with over $300 million paid by homeowners insurance’ compare that to 5 fatal attacks buy exotic felines in 3 YEARS!!
this is propaganda! …
this is propaganda!!! you only show negleted and ill treated animals. i cant say i really agree with owning cats in the pathera family i.e. tiger, lion, jaguer, leopord….but puma and smaller cats make good pets if you have the time and expertese to care for them.
Most mammals? …
Most mammals? Doesn’t that include dogs and cats then?
You don’t have to agree with me, but i’m not going to disown my pet on account of some obsessed animal rights activist telling me its cruel.
I’ve seen many content pet chinchillas in my life. They’ve been born in captivity and they’re used to the indoors.
Just to add, nobody in my home smokes, we try not to use excessive chemicals or fresheners anyway, and we never spray it around the animals. >>

Thank you for this video. Educating the public is the key to ending this abuse.
You may think your …
You may think your house smells fine, but your Chinchilla may have other notions. Most mammals’ sense of smell is 40-100 times as good as ours. Imagine how your household odors (perfumes/ colognes, chemical-laden cleaning products, cigarettes, room “freshener” sprays, etc., etc.) smell to him. Animals like that are meant to survive off their sense of smell, and be out in the natural world, not forced to breath all the chemical artificial perfume-laden crap that humans have in their homes.
Hooooooooly crap.

Hooooooooly crap.
Who are you to tell me that I’m not responsible? You don’t even know me.
I let my chinchilla run free in my room when it needs excercise. My house does NOT smell, thanks very much, and if the chinchilla hasn’t been domesticated, it would act wild. It would not act tame, it would not allow itself to be held, and it would bite and scratch. They don’t.
Thanks Journeyman!

A.M.: great job yet …
A.M.: great job yet again for so clearly explaining this problem. I can’t believe some boneheads can watch this and still come up with lame excuses as to why it’s ok to “own” exotic nonhumans.
Keep up the good work!
malaki: “exotic” is …
malaki: “exotic” is generally any animal that has not been domesticated. Only dogs, cats, and some farm animals are not considered exotic, everything else is, including your chinchilla. Chinchillas have not been bred over thousands of years to be domesticated. You may feel you are “responsible” by keeping and feeding one, but what about the wild needs of the animal? Did you ever consider that maybe he or she would rather be living out in nature, as it should, rather than your stinky house?
This video is …
This video is talking about big cats and chimps, it never mentions chinchillas. The problem with exotic ownership is in this area, although chinchillas are exotic pets. When people refer to banning ownership, they are talking about the exotic cats and chimps.

What is “exotic”?
If its keeping an animal like a tiger or something, then yeah, that probably isnt so hot, but chinchillas and sugar gliders yeah. I own a chinchilla and it is already 2 years old. And i’m sure there ARE responsible owners out there. You cant judge everyone who owns an animal like this for what a few people have done >_>
