Who Can Be Sued When Animals Attack?

The brother of Charla Nash, the victim of a brutal chimp attack, has been given guardianship over his sister’s wellbeing, which opens the door for him to pursue legal action.
But the problem is who to sue?
In Connecticut, at least right now, it is legal to own chimps.
Attorney Amy Feldman said the law for owning exotic animals varies from state to state, and she discussed general owner responsibilities for owning exotic and more traditional pets.

Chile: Contraband of Exotic Animals Seized

The Chilean Navy uncovered a “Noah’s Ark” of contraband exotic animals, shipped from Peru to Chile. Many of the animals are of endangered species.
Based at the naval port of Arica, Chile, the overnight Naval patrol noticed a boat heading for shore with its lights off.

After checking for a registration, the authorities discovered caged animals on board.

Most of the exotic animals were quickly turned over to local maritime authorities.

“In total, with all in agreement on the final count, there were around 400 animals that were being held captive, including macaws, parrots, toucan birds, marine turtles, squirrels and other species.”

The complete count of the contraband was 308 marine turtles, 40 land turtles, 25 squirrels, 20 each of macaws and parrots and 11 alligators.

Some of the species on board are also facing the threat of extinction, including the arawana parrot.

The boat, sailing under the name of “Rosa Isabel,” departed from the Peruvian beach town of Los Palos, just 10 kilometers north of the Chilean-Peruvian border.

The vessel was then headed for Arica, whose current black market rates would have put the total worth of the animals at around $56,000 US dollars.

Chilean judicial authorities said many of the animals were protected under the international Agreement Over Threatened Jungle Animals Commerce (CITES).

[Javiera Lopez, Arica Prosecutor]:
“As a result of the patrol, we were able to find a person inside of the boat, who was then arrested, and who was transporting various cages with animals of exotic origin — we could say — and that are also protected by the CITES agreement.”

Moises Segundo Diaz Verdugo, the Chilean man found on board was arrested for contraband, trade of prohibited species and animal mistreatment.

Kinkajou @ Ack’s Exotic Pets Shop (Part III)

Our experience at Ack’s Exotic Pets was the Best Ever! I was so happy with the service. My husband and I called the shop looking to visit an exotic animal known as the Kinkajou. I have always been fascinated with remarkable exotic animals, especially kinkajous. The owner was incredibly polite and courteous over the phone, a pleasure to talk to. He informed us that he did indeed have a Kinkajou that he was provisionally caring for in his shop. A week later we went to see the Kinkajou that I inquired about.

The owner rescued the kinkajou and is taking great care of him in hopes of finding him a good home. A great future is in store for the little sweetheart. Unconditional love, patience, a healthy diet, a tropical paradise with tall trees, plants, and an infinite supply of fruit, are all things this little fellow needs in order to be happy and healthy. Hopefully, someone will provide this kinkajou with a good home and plenty of love, maybe it could be you.

During our visit to Ack’s Exotic Pets I was blown away by the variety of exotic animals in his shop. He had so many different species of parrots, beautiful bearded dragons, his personally owned South American raccoons, fascinating species of aquatic animals, the sweetest cat that will walk up to you with a smile, stunning turtles, vibrant snakes and so many more. Please don’t hesitate to visit Ack’s Exotic Pets, it will be the BEST experience of your life!
